A Marathon Cause for Positive Mental Health

Taking part in this year's London Marathon on Sunday 17 April will be a local lass from Turriff – Lorna Wilson.

Lorna is an experienced long-distance runner and her ambition has always been to run in the highly-rated London Marathon.

She will be travelling from her home in Amsterdam to take part and says 'This is the ultimate marathon for me. In a way it is a mission also as I intend to raise as much money as I can for a very worthy and personal cause - Companions – a befriending project based in Peterhead, which is part of Mental Health Aberdeen. The money will be used to pay volunteers’ expenses.

" My dad, Jimmy Wilson, had a mental illness which sadly resulted in him taking his own life and so I feel it would be appropriate for me to remember him by taking part in this marathon whilst at the same time supporting our own local mental health charity".

"Companions matches caring, reliable and well-trained volunteers with people in the local community who have mental health problems. It seeks to provide regular social contact promoting a trusting relationship between client and volunteer-befriender. It works to promote the principles of social inclusion and recovery".

"My mum, Mrs Moira Wilson, is one of the Banff volunteers working for Companions and she regularly visits two clients, taking them out for short trips. It has also helped her cope with losing her husband under extremely difficult circumstances. I hope to beat my previous time of 3:39 and I am so delighted that mum will be there to cheer me on in London!"

MHA Fundraising

At MHA we strive to ensure that the people whom we support receive the highest possible standard of service from us. Much of our “core” work is funded from statutory sources such as Local Authorities and Health Boards. These are, however, challenging times where great demands are placed on our funders to achieve even greater efficiencies. As a charity, we want to provide more than our “core funding” allows and this is where the support of local people businesses, clubs and other groups and individuals is vital.

You’ve seen on this website how we help other people – will you please help us?

With your help, extra money we will:

  • keep the help we give to individuals personal and flexible
  • allow us to continue to provide innovative, person centred solutions
  • improve the quality of life for those who need us
  • let us invest in providing even better services for people
  • enable us to help even more people
  • support our efforts to reduce ignorance, fear and stigma
  • allow us to campaign at both local and national levels
  • help us to survive financial “rainy days” and go on helping people who are vulnerable

How can you help?

  • become a member (corporate/personal)
  • make a donation
  • have fun doing a sponsored activity
  • remember us in your will
  • enjoy fundraising for us with work colleagues
  • ask your company or employer to help us too – corporate donation, gift in kind, organise a dinner/dance, dressing down days, teambuilding fundraising activities, sponsorship of our services or of publicity materials etc
  • put the fun into fundraising by doing it with friends – from a barbeque to a competition
  • organise a raffle
  • encourage sports and social clubs to help us
  • tell other people about our work – family, friends, customers, suppliers
