Trauma can affect people in many ways.  They can develop a post-trauma stress reaction, which in some cases does result in long-term difficulties both for victims and their families and friends. A minority of victims will develop post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Whilst survivors and bereaved families and friends are commonly offered immediate support in the wake of large or well publicised traumatic events, those who are victims of sudden daily trauma (including road, industrial and domestic accidents, and assaults) are rarely offered immediate emotional assistance or information, each individual will use different strategies to cope with his/her experience. But often isolation and confusion are experienced by survivors and their families.  Frequently, symptoms of post-trauma stress are not expected, or may last much longer than anticipated and lead to pressure on health and relationships.  Legal and employment issues can arise unexpectedly as a result of sudden trauma.
